About this converter
Every iPhone since iOS 11 saves photos as HEIC by default. Apple chose it because HEIC files are roughly half the size of JPGs at the same quality. The problem is that Windows, most web forms, and plenty of apps still choke on HEIC. This converter uses the heic2any library to decode your HEIC file in the browser, then re-encodes it as JPEG at your chosen quality level (High/92% by default) through the Canvas API. You can adjust the quality and background color in the Conversion Settings panel. The whole thing runs locally. Your photos are not sent to any server, and you can verify that yourself in the Network tab of DevTools.
The output file will actually be larger than the original HEIC because JPEG compression is less efficient. A 2 MB HEIC file typically becomes 3.5 to 4.5 MB as JPG. That is the tradeoff for universal compatibility. The default High quality level (92%) matches what Photoshop uses for high-quality JPEG export, so the visual difference from the original is negligible for sharing and printing at normal sizes.
EXIF metadata like GPS coordinates, camera model, and date is stripped during conversion because the Canvas API does not preserve it. Live Photo video data and depth maps are also not included. You get the main still image only. If you need lossless quality for editing or archival, use HEIC to PNG instead. The file will be much larger but every pixel is preserved exactly.
HEIC vs JPG
High Efficiency Image Container (HEIC)
HEIC (High Efficiency Image Container) is Apple's default photo format since iOS 11, offering roughly 50% smaller files than JPEG at equivalent quality using HEVC compression.
Common uses: iPhone photos, Apple devices, and modern cameras
JPEG Image (JPG)
JPG (JPEG) is a lossy compressed image format widely used for photographs and web graphics, offering small file sizes with acceptable quality loss.
Common uses: photographs, web images, and social media
JPEG standard (jpeg.org)How to convert HEIC to JPG
- 1
Select your HEIC photo
Drag and drop a .heic or .heif file onto the converter or click to browse. These are the default photo format on iPhones since iOS 11. The file is read locally and never uploaded.
- 2
Wait for decoding
The heic2any library decodes the HEIC container in your browser. This can take a few seconds for large 12MP+ photos since the decoding is computationally intensive and runs client-side.
- 3
Check the JPG output
Verify the image looks correct. The JPG is exported at your chosen quality level (High/92% by default, adjustable in the Conversion Settings panel). The file will be larger than the original HEIC because JPEG is less efficient at compression. Colors and detail should match the original.
- 4
Download the JPG
Save the .jpg file. It is now compatible with Windows, web forms, email attachments, and every application that does not support HEIC.
